INDIFFERENT BY OVERWHELMIZATION

Please excuse the above neologism (or don't). Maybe it will catch on! It is certainly not intended to be a nonce word. The continuation of one's suffering through relentless streams of coarse disinformation is a safe wager. Today's media has a lot on offer for the chewing pleasure. Sifting through it purposefully can only increase your health.

Accept full well that within the civilized world, it is a crucial human right that one can express beliefs and opinions in any form. A defence Christopher Hitchens* oft offered at profane literature was that everyone in the world has a right to consume those written words as does the author to set them into prose (or poetry). I.O.W., censorship is an infringement on everyone's freedom, unless you are comfortable relinquishing your judgement to someone else. The incessant barrage of media launched at our senses while chocked full of politically driven opinions (and a dash of fact), is regretfully numbing a great deal of valuable cerebral cortices. By choice, people are tuning out in order to protect themselves from mental harm. Those who are driven to do so, become indifferent to humankind's plight, often extracting themselves from the electorate. NOT A GREAT TREND IF INVOKING MEANINGFUL POLITICAL CHANGE IS A GOAL.

Non-traditional media is admittedly intriguing. Profanity and no-budget backdrops ought to have a null effect on one's perception of it. Just like organic food, it seems much less packaged and processed than the 6 o'clock news. These characteristics drastically increase its' palatability, yet obviously, not its validity. A main concern however is the sheer volume that is up for digestion. Along with this obscenity comes a multitude of opinions, perspectives and impetuses. This is where overwhelmization rears it's ugly head. If one endeavours to delve into every nook and cranny of non-traditional media, even for benign objectives, the resultant disturbing change to one's personality can far out weigh anything gained from doing so.

Offering solutions is not on the menu here. What is, you ask? -realizing that great thinking is being quelled by the current format (breached levee) of the information landscape. One skill for those "checked out" beings (or those contemplating "checking out" is to SWIFT SWORD all those spewers of the "I'm just saying" rhetoric. Stirring up shit does nothing to advance discussion or consensus. The posters of such a persuasion (shit disturbers) have selfish, desperate and vain motives. After exiting a session consuming such dreck, nary a skiff of satisfaction or reward lingers- you feel worse (agitated, disturbed, disheartened) than you did going in. Nothing valuable gained-merely time wasted {time is all we have)!

Culling undesirable streams of media (which hinder your ability to rationally respond to current issues while diverting your mood to a negative or neutral space) is worth trying. The world needs the cerebral not just those that emote. Discourse solves problems. Invested citizens improve quality of life. Civilized society implores you. Don't check out. Stay with us folks!

* N.B. The choice of referring to this late polemic giant herein has zero to do with his well known anti-theist posture ... BUT ... it is a nice little bonus.
